Connection Is the Cure
Instead of looking outward to see how you connect with something, look inward to see how you connect with everything.
Much of our suffering in life comes from desire; the desire to have what someone else has, the desire to be free from obligations, the desire to act differently than how our theatrical society expects us to perform, or the desire to be rich and famous–which ultimately translates to a desire to be treated better than the next person.
We’re led to thinking this way because to understand ourselves, who we are on a deep animal, intellectual, and philosophical level, we naturally begin comparing ourselves to others at a young age. It’s an attempt to see who we are as an individual by trying to chip away who we are not. While this is mostly fine, it sets a rather troublesome behavior pattern into motion.
The habit of basing our value or ‘what’s right’ on others means we’re locked in an endless game of comparison that never results in us feeling better than when we started. After sizing someone else up, we either suffer because we want what they have or suffer because we desire for them to change and be more like us. As if who we are is a premium form of existence.
This suffering, like most, can be resolved by a change of perspective. Inverting our view of the world to see how we are similar to other people instead of different from them shifts a destructive reality into a constructive one. No longer are we tearing people down but rather building them up.
This promotes a form of equanimity, where we release judgment, set differences aside, and see where we connect with others. Then, the resonance becomes the path through which two individuals can wholesomely grow at once by deepening a shared slice of humanity.
If you look inward long enough, you will see that you are connected to everyone. We are all humans, living in flawed perfection. There’s nothing to desire, only truths we need to accept more deeply. Keeping your perspective tuned to how you’re similar to each person you look in the eyes will not only help you continue to grow but will clarify the true meaning of the freedom you’ve instinctively desired from birth.
