First Thought Friday 11/12/21
Take your time, breathe deeply, and consciously relax the muscles in your body. There’s nowhere to be but right where you are.
Our lives are like flowing rivers. At times they flow fast and at others, they slowly crawl. They can be filled with tree branches or completely clear. Sometimes rives can be full of floating glacial ice, while geothermal rives can get so hot they steam. Sometimes rivers receive a massive amount of upstream water and start to rage, sending white foam and spray in all directions. Other times the water supply gets sparse and the river barely trickles.
One thing all of these rivers have in common is momentum. No matter the state, contents, or condition of a river, it is always flowing. Even a river that’s frozen has momentum. It’s merely paused in motion, patiently waiting for enough warmth to start up again.
In the busyness of our lives, we can take on too much and become overwhelmed. Tension can build until we rage and foam. Lots of things can not go our way in a short amount of time, and we can feel like we are starting to freeze. If we don’t refill our energy, we can find ourselves barely trickling.
During these intense periods, it’s important not to get lost in identifying with the current state of the river. We just have to remember our momentum. No matter what’s happening, we are flowing, life is gradually changing from one set of circumstances to the next, and we are the awareness that is watching it all.
The more we can remember our natural state of flowing, the more we are able to slow down, live fluidly with a relaxed mind and body, and deeply breathe in the gift of the present moment. Not in spite of the challenges we might face, but in acceptance of them, with a knowing that they are simple seasons gracefully flowing through our timeless abundant existence.
