How To Deal With False Mental Stories
Mental stories constantly arise in our minds, suggesting how things are unfolding in an attempt to fill gaps in the unknown. Even though these assumptions made by our minds are meant to help us prepare for what could come next, they often create anxiety and misperceptions.
We have a habit of mistaking anything we think for truth. So, when we’re in an emotional state and a negative mental narrative comes to mind, we feel genuine tension, fear, or anger because we assume that since we can imagine it, it must be partially true.
Finding yourself suffering because of the projection about reality that’s flowing through your head is heavy because you have to deal with it on your own. You can talk it out with others, which is healthy, but at the end of the day, the thoughts are living in your head so you have to be the one to work with them.
When a narrative about an event is swirling in your mind, the first thing you need to do is take a beat, slow down, and recognize the story as a story.
Doing this breaks the power that the story has over you. Not necessarily the emotional feelings, but the delusion that what you have imagined is real.
This is important because making this distinction keeps you from taking actions based on your false narrative, which prevents the creation of suffering for yourself and others.
Once you have broken the illusion of the story, you can then move to letting go of the emotional heaviness that might remain. Take calm breaths, continue to remind yourself the narrative is imaginary, and visualize that you’re blowing the tension out of your mouth every time you exhale.
Repeat this practice until you feel calm, centered, back in touch with the present moment, and grounded by a clearer view of reality.
