Thinking for only a few seconds, we could come up with a list of things we could do that would improve our lives. The problem is that even though we know what to do, how to do it, and the proven impact it will have, we still can’t seem to make ourselves follow through. The reason we can’t stick with positive changes in our life isn’t because anything is wrong with us or that we aren’t capable. It’s because we are distracted.
Building a positive habit into your day like meditation, exercise, or journaling, is simple. It’s nothing more than creating one more step in your daily routine. The thing that prevents us from staying consistent is that our focus is often allowed to wander aimlessly, which keeps us distracted, and makes us forget to practice our new habit.
Being more mindful with your attention is a strong way to help build positive habits into your life. Make it a point to check in with yourself and consider if what you’re doing or are going to do next is intentional or if your attention drifted there. Once you practice this and start spending less time on auto-pilot, you’ll notice extra time in the day and how much control you have over the way you spend it. From there, it’s about creating small reminders that help you cement your habit into your routine and using the command of your mindful awareness to make them a reality.
