Think back to the last time you were calm, clear, and in your flow.
It’s a beautiful feeling, one where we feel peaceful with our bodies and minds at ease as if all is right in the universe.
Yet, most of us don’t spend the majority of our time feeling this way. The stress of life builds. One thing always leads into the next, and we slowly get pulled into a space where we are tense, scattered, and unfocused.
Sometimes, for days, weeks, or months on end, we live in a momentum of tension, with tight shoulders, tired nerves, and a mind that feels like it’s trying to simply stay above water.
However, if we reflect for a moment, we can see that this is really due to more of a lapse of perspective than anything else.
Sure, life will always have stress, but the mindset in which we engage with it is what dictates how we experience our lives.
For example, I’ve been working most of my life to stay connected with a mental space that feels peaceful, abundant, and clear. Still, now and then, everything hits at once, and I fall into the stride of feeling tense and not as deeply grounded as I usually am.
This happened just yesterday. Many things had been building up and demanding my attention and time over the past week. As more and more of my mental real estate was being chipped away, I was slowly getting more tense and further from the present.
While walking my dog, I saw a beautiful butterfly sitting in the grass, elegantly beating its wings in that luxuriously tempting way that they do. I noticed my mind rush to dryly index that it was “beautiful” without registering any emotions that go along with beauty so I could move on. Then a realization hit me–and I bursted out laughing.
Normally, when I see something like a butterfly, I pause and soak in such a creature's incredible nuance, beauty, and pure magic–along with marveling at the fact that the human brain can register such things as beauty, gratitude, and wonder. In this rare moment, I hadn’t done that, and it was an immediate reminder to drop the story of tension in my mind that I was attached to, let go, realign, and tune back into the present moment.
See, that beautiful, peaceful place of presence is always waiting for us. It doesn’t go anywhere when we forget about it, no matter how long we do.
That bountiful space is there, waiting for us to remember it so we can center ourselves, drop what doesn’t matter, and approach life with a mindset of gratitude, presence, and peacefulness.
