Change makes us feel anxious because it threatens our feeling of comfort and stability. We often don’t choose to make changes in our lives because once we find a steady coasting point, we’d rather stay with what’s familiar than risk mixing things up. But sometimes, changes happen in our lives that aren’t in our control. Our relationships, professional lives, and friendships can start shifting and upset the comfortable patterns we’ve become familiar with.
When this happens, it feels like the rug is being pulled from underneath us. It makes us feel uncertain, anxious, and helpless. That’s because we are looking at the situation with a passive mindset. That makes it seem like change is happening ‘to us’ instead of ‘for us.’ This perspective gives our power to the change. We then grasp at what we can, put our heads down, and try to ride out the storm.
However, we can take back our power in these seasons of change by switching to an active mindset. As things begin to change around us, we can acknowledge the shift and start making intentional choices that help us flow with it all. We move into the storm and gain confidence knowing we’ve made it through changes before. Embracing change and using our power to navigate its flowing waters with an optimistic and decisive point of view will help us have a say in the shift of our lives and land at a destination better than we could have ever thought possible.
