We all have dreams.
We come up with ideas about what our ideal future could look like.
We even come up with the moves we need to make to get us there.
But then something happens.
We don’t act.
Why is it that even though we know how we want to level up on a personal and professional level and often even know how to make it happen, we still don’t move forward?
Because there is a wall of self-doubt holding back our ambitions.
Since our culture is competitive, quick to judge, and taught to gauge value by comparison, it makes it daunting to follow through with our vision of growth.
That’s because when we grow, we make ourselves vulnerable.
We externalize our desires. When we do that, other people can see a part of us we’ve kept hidden and protected.
What’s even more scary is that when we put ourselves out there, other people can criticize us too. Also, we fear that if we make our plans public, others will know if we fail.
Here’s the truth about this.
No one cares.
Everyone is focused on themselves. They aren’t worried about you trying to improve your life, taking risks, or upping your game. They are busy trying to figure out how to do that for themselves.
I spent years wishing I could take what I was doing to the next level. I was never worried about my ability. I’m confident in my mind, expertise, and experience. The issue was that I didn’t like putting myself out there because I had a negative self-image. I was worried that how I looked would turn people off to the wisdom I could share.
One day it hit me that it just didn’t matter. It was all in my head. So I started taking the steps I felt would get me where I wanted to go and stopped giving power to my fear.
